T.E. Morris - Edina Photographer
T.E. Morris is the official photographer for the Da Beauty League! He has a recognizable style of sharp, bright images that capture the moment. Whether it's the game-winning goal or a candid exchange on the bench, the photographs register as authentic, incredibly close-up and packed with energy and emotion.
He is wonderful to work with and so talented. We are excited to be featuring him on our Spotlight.
We had the opportunity to ask him a few questions…
What is your favorite thing about photography?
My favorite thing about photography is catching something that would not otherwise be visible, something that happens too quickly to be seen. Many detailed elements can be captured and understood only through photography.
When did you start photography and how did your passion for photography begin?
Before I could afford taking photographs I consumed them in large quantities. Photojournalism in any publication…Life Magazine, Newsweek & Time. As you might expect, Sports Illustrated was fascinating to me. As a weekly magazine, it didn't have the breaking stories, it had to draw you in with images and perspectives that no one else had.
What do you love about shooting for the Da Beauty League?
I love the speed of 4-on-4 hockey. The league has given me incredible access to capture the amazing camaraderie between players of all levels of play.
What is your favorite type of photography?
You'd think it would be action shots but through sports I've become incredibly passionate about capturing candid moments off the field of play. Interactions between coaches and the team, a joke shared on the bench, or a lone player in silent preparation before a game. I have an ongoing series dedicated to capturing athletes just off the ice or turf - exhausted, sweaty but invariably determined. I post them on my Instagram each week on "Warrior Wednesday".
If you could share one bit of advice to kids, what would it be?
Go out and take a bunch of bad photos. As many as you can and don't get frustrated by the results. Make adjustments, learn about the settings on your camera. Then go take more bad photos. To this day, 9 out of 10 photos that I shoot in any given game are unusable. That ratio is better than it used to be, but it means I have to make adjustments between periods of play, returning to take a lot of photographs the rest of the game.
We recently featured one of T.E.’s photos at the Art of Edina Braemar Arena gallery. Stop by and check it out! Find more information about T.E. Morris on his website: temophoto.photoshelter.com.
